Recycling & Waste Management
Port of Grenaa in global collaboration on recycling and greening
The circular economy is high on the agenda at Port of Grenaa - for the benefit of the green transition, innovative recycling solutions and economically sound business. That's why we work with globally-oriented companies that focus on recycling and the environment - including how we add value to materials and reduce the need to extract new raw materials.
Recycling creates growth, innovation and exports
Some of the companies Port of Grenaa works with are recovering metal from shipbreaking and exporting it successfully. Others are refurbishing wind turbines - and extending the life of otherwise worn-out turbines.
Port of Grenaa is a partner in the EU project Decom Tools. The aim is to investigate how decommissioning of end-of-life offshore wind turbines can best be turned into a sustainable and profitable business. In general, we have extensive experience in green transition and circular economy.
A surprising number of materials and products - which would otherwise end up as waste - can be rolled back one or more steps in the value chain and recycled in production again. Or become part of a whole new cycle.
The whole package in Grenaa: from facilities to waste management
Contact Port of Grenaa to ensure that your company's residues and waste are processed and stored optimally. We'll put facilities and knowledge at your disposal. Also make use of our:
-
Strong competencies in logistics
-
Flexible and extensive crane capacity
-
Experienced crew always delivering first class service
-
Advantageous port facilities far from ordinary housing
Safe handling of slurry and tank cooling water
The port has the right facilities to receive and handle your company's slop and tank cooling water in an environmentally friendly and recyclable way. This includes environmentally approved tank farms of various capacities.
The port of Grenaa has a modern plant for the treatment of liquid industrial waste water from ships and aqueous waste from the offshore sector. Products such as desludging, tank cooling water, sludge etc. are handled and recycled in a professional and sustainable manner.
For example, water and waste substances are separated from the oil, after which the oil can be recycled and upcycled into fuel oil. After a treatment process of the contaminated wastewater, the water will be so clean that it can be recirculated at the municipal wastewater treatment plant.
Port of Grenaa becomes environmentally certified
The green transition is central to Port of Grenaa, as we want to contribute to the green solutions of the future and minimize our own environmental impact. Port of Grenaa is certified in Environmental Management (ISO 14001).
ISO certification is your company's guarantee that we are always doing our best and striving, wherever possible, to set high benchmarks for our norms, standards and values.
See details of the Port of Grenaa's three certifications ISO 9001, 14001 and 45001.
EU project investigates sustainable decommissioning of offshore wind turbines
Port of Grenaa participates in the international Decom Tools project, which explores business models to make decommissioning of end-of-life offshore wind turbines a sustainable and profitable business.
"We have many years of experience as a professional wind port. At the same time, we have a strong strategic focus on circular economy. Port of Grenaa also houses several companies with expertise in ship dismantling and metal waste management. So it is natural that we participate in a project that brings together expertise on how to best manage the 20-25 year old offshore wind farms in the seas around us," says Port of Grenaa CEO Henrik Carstensen.
The environmental footprint of wind turbines must be reduced
Most wind turbines have a life expectancy of up to 20-25 years. They are then decommissioned or refurbished to extend their life. Decommissioning processes are well known for onshore wind turbines, but for offshore wind turbines experience is limited.
The objective of the EU project is therefore "to promote sustainable and economically sound decommissioning of offshore wind turbines" - by:
- Increase knowledge and expertise in the field among the stakeholders involved in the North Sea region
- Reduce the environmental footprint of decommissioning by 25 percent
- Reduce decommissioning costs by 20 percent
Preparation, installation and decommissioning of offshore wind turbines on Port of Grenaa
Port of Grenaa aims to expand its knowledge of wind turbine decommissioning and share its experience of managing offshore wind projects. The hope is to attract more companies with particular expertise in this field.
"Building on the many activities we already have in sustainable management of scrap metal and other waste products, it is natural that we combine our experience from preparing and establishing offshore wind farms to also be able to dismantle the old offshore turbines that will need to be replaced in the coming decades."
- says Henrik Carstensen.
Project participants from across Europe
The EU project is led by the Technical University in the German city of Emden and funded by the EU's Interreg programme. Participants come from all over the EU - and from Denmark the Energy Innovation Cluster, Samsø Municipality, Funen Maritime Cluster and Port of Grenaa.
The project is completed in spring 2023.
