We know many people like to visit the pier, but unfortunately, due to storm damage, it is heavily damaged. The waves are violent and can easily move concrete blocks of up to 2.5 tons!
To ensure your safety, we have set up no-entry barriers that we ask you to respect. The pier is only cordoned off for your safety and so that we can make the necessary repairs once the insurance issue has been settled.
We hope for your understanding and hope to open the pier as soon as possible - we will let you know when it is safe to walk on it again.
We don't want to see anyone get hurt - so take care of yourself and each other.
A very strong easterly storm has hit Grenaa harbor today. The storm has increased in strength in the afternoon hours.
Powerful waves have destroyed the bulwark
The waves have therefore been so strong that they have unfortunately destroyed a small part of the bulwark on the South Pier. This meant that for a period of time, massive water masses entered the harbor area, which, among other things, "hit" Stena Line's marshalling areas and the adjacent roads.
After the damage was discovered, the port's employees immediately set about trying to repair it. They succeeded with the construction of a concrete wall made of concrete blocks, the result of which can be seen in the photo here.
This has apparently and fortunately helped the situation so that since the wall was completed, the water levels in the harbor have not risen any further.
This, along with another emergency solution, where we tried to divert some of the water through the southern railing and out into Grenaaen, has also helped the situation.
People who have been working at the port for many years have told us today that this is the worst storm they have experienced in the last 40 years. The storm is thus a good proof of the massive forces from the sea we have been and are up against.
Waves will decrease in power, strength and height
According to the latest weather forecasts, the wind should shift more to the north in the coming hours, which will also mean that the waves will decrease in power, strength and height.
Fortunately, there has not been high tide today, which has meant that our harbor basins in Sydhavnen have not had any water over the quays.
Developments are closely monitored
The above measures mean that we have the necessary control over the situation, but we will of course continue to monitor developments very closely.
The Port of Grenaa has a long tradition of continuously expanding and developing its areas, facilities and services. The port specializes in serving companies with optimal conditions.
The port's newest venture is in the hinterland to the north. It has become a larger article, which you can read here.
In December, Lager & Transport Magasinet published an article describing the future scenarios and focus areas that the Port of Grenaa is looking towards.
