Electric car charging at Port of Grenaa

Ten new charging stations for electric cars on Port of Grenaa

Now it's easier to get electricity for your car in Grenaa. Grenaa Port's partner Sustain is setting up ten electric charging stations on the port's premises, and the first have been put into use.

The infrastructure at Port of Grenaa gets another boost in a green direction as the company SustainRecharge sets up ten electric charging stations on the port's premises.

"The rollout of electric charging stations is in full swing in Denmark, and it is of course obvious to place charging stations in a traffic hub such as Port of Grenaa.
In SustainRecharge, we look forward to citizens experiencing our reliable solution and how easy it is to charge with the Spirii Go App", says Jens Almdal, CEO, SustainRecharge.

A charging solution that will benefit private cars, tourists and businesses

SustainRecharge electric charging stations are free for anyone to use, without any commitment, membership fee or subscription. This will benefit many of the port's users, whether they are the many employees of the companies at the port, or tourists taking the Stena Line ferry to Sweden or visiting the Kattegat Centre.

"At the Port of Grenaa, it is a clear priority to support the development of a robust and sustainable infrastructure. Therefore, we are pleased that Sustain is establishing ten electric charging stations in the port area, which will benefit a very large target group. The electric charging stations are fully in line with the port's efforts to promote the transition to and development of renewable energy", says Henrik Carstensen, CEO, Port of Grenaa.

The first electric charging stations are in use

The first electric car drivers have already put green power in the tanks of the electric charging stations.
Local electricians have installed the first six electric charging stations at the Port Centre, Havnecentervej 1, which is the headquarters and administration of the Port of Grenaa.
The remaining four charging points will be installed at Færgevej 2 by the end of November 2021.

FACTS

Infrastructure upgrades are positive

Historically, infrastructure to and from the port has been a high priority focus for Port of Grenaa. Especially in the recent period, when for a long time it did not seem to go Djursland's way with upgrades and improvements to the transport area. Intensive work to get politicians' attention focused on Djursland has now borne partial fruit, in the now agreed infrastructure plan for 2022-2035.

Positivism in evidence at Port of Grenaa

Despite the fact that the Port of Grenaa's prioritized wish for a 2-1 high class road from Tåstrup all the way to Grenaa was not fulfilled this time around, there is positivism to be found in Henrik Carstensen, CEO Port of Grenaa.

"In the wake of the port's prosperity in recent years and Stena Line's plans to double capacity on the Grenaa-Halmstad link, we expect a massive increase in heavy traffic on Djursland, to and from Grenaa. That is why we are keen to focus on upgrading the A15 as a first priority. We at the port are pleased that more political thought is now being given to upgrading the southbound route to and from Grenaa. We are therefore looking forward to the expected upgrading of route 15 between Bale and Tåstrup," says Henrik Carstensen.

Two planned bypasses on the A15

In the infrastructure agreement 2021, the parties have reached a settlement on two bypasses of four kilometres north of Tirstrup and four kilometres east of Trustrup.

"With the two planned bypasses at Tirstrup and Trustrup, traffic will positively flow better. It is very important for our logistics companies that goods can be transported efficiently to and from the port. Such significant infrastructure changes will always have an impact on the surrounding area, including locally. From the port's point of view, and with a deep-rooted desire to continue strengthening and developing our local area, this upgrade is an important parameter for our customers and partners," notes Henrik Carstensen.

Focus on even better infrastructure maintained

Port of Grenaa continues the active political dialogue on an even better infrastructure in Djursland. Henrik Carstensen sees an opportunity to continue influencing the DKK 3.5 billion pool, which has not yet been prioritised for specific projects.

"As we see it, we lack, with the new infrastructure agreement, relatively short stretches in having a well upgraded and modern road system, south of Grenaa. Therefore, we are not sitting back, rather the opposite. We intend to maintain our intensive focus on continuous and ongoing upgrades of the infrastructure on Djursland", concludes Henrik Carstensen.

Ports are hubs for climate-friendly transport

In the Infrastructure Plan for 2035 Denmark Forward, better access roads to the Danish ports is a direct focus area. Especially as ports are hubs for climate-friendly transport by sea. Port of Grenaa can alleviate some of the congestion on the roads and at the same time help the environment by getting more trucks out to sea. Grenaa has an important link to Sweden with the Grenaa-Halmstad connection. Right now, more than 37,000 trucks a year use the blue motorway between Grenaa and Halmstad. When Stena Line introduces another ferry, it is estimated that an additional 30,000 trucks will use the ferry route. In addition, there will be tourism-related traffic.

As one of Denmark's major industrial and commercial ports, Port of Grenaa efficiently handles goods from land to water, benefiting businesses and society. With solid business and local support, Port of Grenaa strengthens its position as a proud industrial port in the centre of Denmark. Gateway to the Kattegat.

Keeping the growth track

Port of Grenaa has achieved a turnover of DKK 60 million in 2020, which is exactly the same as the two record years 2018 and 2019. On the bottom line, the result for the year is DKK 9.2 million, which is above budget but below the record years.

At the annual general meeting of Port of Grenaa , the chairman of the board, Bent Hansen, expressed satisfaction with the year's results:

"We are proud that the positive development has continued despite Covid-19. Our bottom line is down, but that's because we heeded the authorities' call last spring to keep the wheels of society turning. We therefore dedicated part of our earnings to renovation projects and the digitalisation of systems and work processes. In doing so, we ensured that there was plenty of work to be done."

Port of Grenaa's CEO, Henrik Carstensen, shares the enthusiasm of the Chairman and the Board, and is particularly pleased with the many forward-looking investments the port has made in 2020:

"The port has, among other things, purchased a large electric mobile crane, established a new multi-purpose yard and three bulk bays. The most significant is undoubtedly the historic decision of the Board of Directors to invest up to DKK 100 million in a new "super quay". The new super quay and the associated backland area are tailored to handle large ships and rigs, including offshore installation vessels. And will be supplied with 18 MW of shore power. The area will also be dedicated to assisting the production of green energy forms such as Power-to-X.

Infrastructure is crucial for green growth

However, it was also a disappointed chairman who in his report expressed his annoyance that a motorway to Grenaa had not been included in the infrastructure negotiations. At the same time, Bent Hansen assured that the port's targeted work on infrastructure would continue:

"Port of Grenaa is growing, Stena Line is growing and Aarhus Airport is developing rapidly. Therefore, we appeal to politicians to prioritise and recognise Djursland as a driver of national growth. I can give many examples of this, but would highlight Stena Line's massive investment in their new Halmstad route related to moving heavy traffic off the E45/E20 and out to sea. The target is 30,000 additional truck trains on the new route. This will contribute positively to congestion on the aforementioned road sections and, not least, provide a somewhat better carbon footprint. But before this huge growth potential can be unlocked, we need an infrastructure that better links Djursland with the rest of Denmark."

New members of the Board

On the board of directors, 2021 has brought several changes to the board composition, as Port of Grenaa welcomes three new board members, Laura Hay, Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen and Jess Abildskou. Laura Hay is a former councilor for Technology and Environment in Aarhus Municipality and has many years of experience as a professional board member. Lene Skovsgaard Sørensen is CEO of the DWP System Supplier network and also has solid experience as a professional board member. Jess Abildskou has more than 20 years of experience from the transportation industry as owner and CEO of Abildskou A/S and as a board member of Orskov Yard. In addition, Jess Abildskou has been a board member of DI Transport for more than 10 years.

In addition to the aforementioned, the Board consists of Chairman Bent Hansen, Vice Chairman Lars Pedersen, Kasper Bjerregaard, Steen Jensen, Lars Møller and Anne Bjerrekær. Chairman Bent Hansen is looking forward to continuing the good cooperation and pursuing the new 2025 strategy of the Port of Grenaa with the management and the board.

All-in on shore power

Port of Grenaa goes all-in on shore power with the establishment of 18 megawatt

At the Port of Grenaa, we have chosen to go "all-in" on shore power. This means that we are upgrading our current supply from 2 MW to 18 MW in order to future-proof the supply of green power to e.g. installation vessels from the offshore wind industry and drilling rigs. We aim to take our share of responsibility for the green transition. Therefore, we will promote the transition from diesel to electricity by offering power solutions to our customers, but also by electrifying our own port operations", says Henrik Carstensen, CEO, Port of Grenaa.

Offshore wind farms require power

In 2020, the wind power industry association WindEurope reported a record-breaking investment in European offshore wind of DKK 196 billion. This is a development that Denmark is also part of, says Theis Gisselbæk, CCO at Port of Grenaa:

"Denmark is facing the establishment of several new offshore wind farms, including Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm - Grenaa Harbour's future neighbour in the Kattegat. It is therefore important for us to be able to offer shore power to installation vessels in connection with the establishment of these large offshore wind projects. Connecting installation vessels, drilling rigs and other vessels to shore power reduces CO2 emissions, but also on-board maintenance costs. Power generation is one of the most costly parts of operating offshore vessels, so being able to switch off the engine and connect it to power instead is a win-win".

Electricity infrastructure to be rolled out at the port

The 18 MW will be available at the port by the summer of 2021, after which work will begin on setting up a supply system to connect ships, rigs and the port's own electrically powered machinery via mobile shore power.

"We're going to put in shore power at our new port expansion. It's a no-brainer as it will be well suited for servicing offshore installations, stacking and testing Power-to-X technology. Afterwards, our other quays will be upgraded with shore power. We are looking into investing in shore power plant number 2 and we are ready to invest in more plants as soon as the need arises", concludes Theis Gisselbæk.

Better infrastructure on Djursland will grow the whole of Central Jutland

"Aarhus Airport is growing, and we can expect a massive increase in activity when one or more offshore wind farms are established in the Kattegat. At the same time, Stena Line has invested heavily in the Grenaa-Halmstad link. In other words, the whole of central Jutland is facing a huge growth adventure in both business and tourism. But the infrastructure needs to keep up," says Henrik Carstensen.

Port of Partnerships

With the new strategy Port of partnerships for a green world , the port is building on a period of great development and progress, as evidenced by the earnings records of the last two years.
This includes the introduction of a new green core segment, Energy & Innovation, and channelling procurement in a more sustainable direction.

"In our previous strategy period, we set a strong direction for the port's future by focusing on development within seven selected core segments. Today, our vision is still to create growth for businesses and society. But today, green transition is on the agenda, the world is changing and the Port of Grenaa is part of it", says Henrik Carstensen, CEO, Port of Grenaa and continues:

"As one of Denmark's major commercial and industrial ports, we believe it is our duty to contribute to achieving the Danish and European goal of full climate neutrality by 2050. Therefore, with the new strategy, we will sharpen the focus on supporting green growth. This means that we must dare to think innovatively, that we must work smarter and that we must contribute to the development of new green technologies.

Sustainability externally and internally

Port of Grenaa has allocated sustainability efforts to seven of the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, in the areas of business sustainability and organisational sustainability.

Business sustainability relates to the port's commercial approach to the market, offering port customers sustainable solutions that strengthen their core business.

Organisational sustainability addresses the internal lines where the port as an organisation will be greener, while focusing on social responsibility and competence development of employees.

"The strategy contains a number of concrete objectives that we are ready to put into action now.One of the key initiatives is that at least 10% of the Port of Grenaa's annual profits are used to invest in green solutions, such as access to green power throughout the port and investment in sustainable equipment."

Want to change and improve with energy & innovation

With the new Energy & Innovation core segment, the port's ambition is to future-proof the industry by establishing intelligent solutions to make logistics run more smoothly and energy resources last longer.

"We believe that a port that seizes new technological opportunities becomes a better port for its partners. For example, we have just invested DKK 25 million in an intelligent Liebherr crane. In addition to being equipped with intelligent automated technology, the crane is currently in Rostock to be converted to run on electricity," says Henrik Carstensen.

Test platform for future green energy

With Energy & Innovation, the port aims to join forces with several globally oriented partners on environment, recycling, but also to become a large-scale test platform for new forms of energy, so-called Power-to-X:

"Port of Grenaa is already known as one of Denmark's leading ports for wind turbine projects. At the same time, we have always worked to promote and develop the transport chain. We will make our experience in these two areas available for the development of new green energy, which will be crucial for the transformation of the entire transport industry", notes Henrik Carstensen.

Just before the turn of the year, the board of Port of Grenaa decided to invest up to DKK 100 million in a historic port expansion, which is expected to be completed in January 2023. The port area will be flexibly designed and upgraded to 18 MW shore power, making it available for large projects across the port's core segments, such as a pre-assembly area and base and service center for Hesselø Offshore Wind Farm and Power-to-X testing.

Infrastructure improvements on the agenda

The Grenaa-Halmstad ferry link will relieve pressure on the road network by acting as a floating highway for many of the thousands of lorries that travel between Jutland and southern Sweden every year. This places high demands on the infrastructure in Djursland. In addition, Port of Grenaa will prepare itself and the infrastructure for a massive increase in activity for a future offshore wind farm or more in the Kattegat. For example, Hesselø in Kattegat, which is expected to be completed in 2027.

At Port of Grenaa , CEO Henrik Carstensen has already presented several politicians with the Port of Grenaa's prioritized infrastructure needs, as the Port of Grenaa has a dedication to live up to the government's wishes to move traffic from road to sea.

The problems of congestion on the roads must be solved, and one of the ways to do this is to use our ports and sea routes, says Henrik Carstensen.

The port is stepping up dialogue with more politicians who can support the port and local area's efforts to continuously modernise infrastructure.

The illustration above shows Grenaa Port's prioritised infrastructure needs, where the first priority is a so-called 2+1 high class road from the end of the Djursland motorway to Grenaa.
